Shiphay to Totnes, the John Musgrave Heritage Trail
10 miles, 9th October 2013.
Wednesday 5th June 2019. A good forecast for the day. Cool with the possibility of showers. 7 Team members on the Cockington to Totnes section of The John Musgrove trail. N.B. The total trail is about 35 miles from Maidencombe to Brixham via Dittisham and Greenway Ferry.
This section is a steady undulating walk of exactly 12 miles inc return through Cockington and has a summated elevation of 2050 ft.
Probably one of the most interesting parts of this section is from Marldon through to Little Hempston passing close to Berry Pomeroy Castle, where it is said, there are two female ghosts; one White Lady and One Blue Lady. As we passed along the path through the dark woods below the castle an apparition occurred in the form of a cloaked and hooded figure, leaning on and searching in a bag attached to a very old looking bicycle. We briefly spoke to the person (figure), trying to exchanging pleasantries. In reply we received two short ‘grunts’ or ‘murmurs”. Sounded dodgy; so continued on rapidly!! Did we imagine the cool misty atmosphere?
The bus return from Totnes to Torquay was uneventful; dropping us off at Livermead for our return route through the Cockington Estate, where we stopped at a garden Café for a cream tea (two abstainers). The treat was on John and George,
The map shows a straight line from Totnes to Torquay. This is the GPS continuity and is not included in the distance calculation……….. Mike.
