Hexworthy, Fox Tor, Whiteworks, Swincombe. 9 Miles. 20th June 2012
Wednesday 17th April 2019, Hexworthy Swincombe; Whiteworks; Nuns Cross; Childe’s Tomb
The day started with thick mist, caused by a warm southerly air flow from central Europe, amalgamating with the existing Easterly cold air over the UK.
Navigation initially, was difficult for our 6 walkers, where the route was determined by existing knowledge (guess-work). Fortunately conditions improved, with rising temperature and full visibility by 11.30 hrs. Maximum day temperature around 11 to 12º C.
The plan was to locate Childe’s Tomb, close to Fox Tor. En-route we located a previously unknown cross at GR 6177 7020, about 1/4 mile West of our intended location. Some debate ensued as to the accuracy of Grid reference generated by our GPS (View Ranger) programme. Clearly there was some error in the co-ordinates of Childe’s Tomb, however I have checked the accuracy of the GPS App from other known fixed positions and found it to be accurate. I propose to check it out again in the near future.
Total Distance walked 8.2 miles; 740 ft elevation.
