W/W 9th January 2019. Shipley Bridge; Avon Dam; Huntington Cross; Red Lake; Two Moors Way; Ball Gate (See map below)The first walk of the New Year. Perfect day; frosty; sunny with NE Wind. 7 Team members plus Miss Daisy O’brian/ Alcroft..
This is always one of our most enjoyable walks, with a flavour of historical Dartmoor, at Huntingdon Warren; the mining activities around Red lake and the remains of the Naphtha Works at Shipley Bridge. The views of course from the top of this grand, clay extraction spoil tip at Red Lake are always spectacular.
The return route mainly followed the Tramway which ultimately terminates at Cantrell near Bittaford. China clay, although it was the’ raison d’être’ of the tramway, it was never actually transported on the line, as it was conveyed in liquid form in double pipes(conduits) approximately following the route of the track. Anyway plenty to read in the ‘The Story of the Dartmoor Railway’ The Redlake Tramway, by E.A. Edwards. NB, I have a copy.
Total Route length 12.7 miles. Total elevation 1318 ft. …….Mike
