The 19th May 2021 represented a new phase in the removal of many restrictions post ‘Lockdown’, for the Covid19 pandemic; making it easier to muster a group of more than 6 people outside and to car share.
Today we had a complement of 7, meeting initially at Gara Bridge. The route followed countryside paths; riverside paths and byways, Part of the route follows the Avon River near N.Huish close to the original Primrose Line rail link from Kingsbridge to South Brent (closed in 1963), meeting up with the main line from London to Penzance. There is a movement to establish a new Primrose trail following as close as possible the original rail route.
The current walk was planned by G.V., and included a visit to St Mary’s Church in North Huish, built in the 14 century. The church is now redundant and cared for by the Church Commission Trust, and is a Grade 1 Listed Building. Many artifacts and fittings have been removed, hence its lack of internal features which usually convey the history and character of a church over the centuries. The bells were taken out and fitted in the parish Church at Salcombe. The Rood Screen has been rescued and reinstated in the church. Route length of walk 11.0 miles. Summated elevation 1599 ft. More information available on the internet. ……..MikeK.
