Moretonhampstead Castle Drogo 11 Mile 2300 ft 2nd Nov 2011
W/W 7th November 2018. Moretonhampstead; Fingle Bridge; Castle Drogo; River Teign A wet and blustery start to the day, reverting to sunshine and showers, as the day continued. The autumn colours of the trees were in sharp resolution, offering an opportunity for interesting photography.
Bearing in mind the time of the year, the overall plan was to follow the higher reaches of the River Teign, after the nights heavy rain and possibly catch sight of migratory Salmon making their way to the spawning grounds some 15 miles from the estuary. One of our stages was to stop at the Weir, below Castle Drogo to wait for an event. Almost immediately a Salmon measuring around 400 mm leaped some 2 metres in the air, in its attempt to cross the extremely turbulent waters of the weir. Unfortunately it failed in this attempt and no further sights were observed.
Additional interest for the day was the sighting of some Goosander Ducks nearby. It’s a colourful bird with quite a variance between male and female (brown). We understand, its a migratory bird, which has spread South from Scotland since 1871, eventually making its way the S.W. over the last 10 years.
Total mileage for the day 9.98 miles
Total elevation 2139 ft………..Mike
