Galmpton Greenway Dittisham Dartmouth 12 Miles 2500 ft 4th April 2012
W/W 20th March 2019. Galmpton (Windy Corner); Dartmouth( via Hr Ferry); Old Mill Creek; Dittisham; Greenaway Ferry; Greenaway HouseA good fine day; weather a little on the cool side. 5 team members undertook this classic walk in the anti- clockwise direction.
The 20th March was the spring equinox with maximum level, high and min low tides. Interesting to note that the Higher Ferry had difficulty in docking at low water, with the exit ramp at a very steep angle: making it problematic for vehicles to disembark. Vehicles were kept towards the rear of the ferry in order to raise the directional bow to aid the aforesaid potential problems.
We had to walk to Ditisham on the anticlockwise route with a degree of urgency, in order to arrive before the last ferry at 16.00 hrs. In the event this wasn’t a problem!
We varied our route after the passenger ferry crossing, to walk through the Greenaway House Gardens and view the early spring blossoms of the Magnolias and Camellias They were of course magnificent in their rich colours. Greenway garden is of course recognised as a foremost place for their stocks of Camellias.
Total Distance 12.5 miles. Summated altitude 2800 ft. Georges GPS measurement was more or less in agreement………….Mike
