Wednesday 29th May 2016. 5 Team Members assembled at Denbury Green in conditions of light rain. The day turned out, mainly cloudy with some occasional drizzle. This part of Devon is mainly farm land (dairy and sheep) and encompasses typically isolated communities. The five Churches are at Denbury; West Ogwell; Woodland; Broadhempston and Torbryan which are (we think), included with others for ecclesiastical administration. West Ogwell Church, however is unused, in good order, but deconsecrated.
The hedgerows (as always) in spring time were rich in colour, supporting a wide range of insect life. In particular we noted a plethora of tightly woven webs supporting hundreds of caterpillars, yet to venture out into the hedgerow vegetation for their food requirements (See below). The caterpillars are from the Lackey Moth which seem to favour Blackthorn Hedges; Hawthorn and many others.
On the final part of the walk, near Torbryan Church, a small hedgehog crossed our path! Not very often seen these days.
Total Distance 12.7 miles (20 Km). Ascent/decent 1412 ft.
See plan for details of route error and position of impassable, flooded bridlepath……….Mike.
