Haytor to Lustleigh 17th November 2010, 12 Miles.
W/W 7th March 2019. Haytor Vale; Yarner Wood; Lustleigh Cleave; Manaton; Leighon; Smallacome RocksThe weather forecast for the day was poor and so it was decided to take a route including Yarner Wood, which offers some protection for important moments like morning coffee etc., whilst relaxing in a 'bird hide’. In the event the conditions were not too bad and although very muddy, we continued on the route into Lustleigh Cleave. On entering the forest near Hisley, we discovered a working team using specialised circular saw and milling machine, preparing quite large quantities of timber (Larch; Douglas Fir; Western Red Cedar etc), fashioned into long heavy duty 'tongue and grooved' boards, destined for use in the preparation of dams within the Myers (Bogs) of Dartmoor. The plan is to control undesirable ecology changes within the drainage systems of the bogs to protect the integrity of the peat; protect the wild life and sustain the capability of the bog structures to retain stored CO2. The proposal is to 're-wet’ the ground by building hundreds of these dams across gullies allowing the rain water to be retained and not drained. The works will take place over a 3 year period covering some 1680 hectares and costing around £2 million covering areas on Exmoor; Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. There is quite a lot of opposition from Farmers, claiming areas would become impassable and be a danger to moor users and animals alike.
The aforesaid is simply a synopsis on the subject. Much has been written and is available on the internet, although under many headings.
The river Bovey in the Cleave was in full spate after around 50 mm rain overnight. The attached video from Roger clearly demonstrates the effect.
Total mileage 11.4 miles. Summated altitude 2544 ft. (See map below)
A successful day………..Mike
