Note of interest : Extract from John Earle's book on Dartmoor : Rippon Tor. [There are many things to look at on the summit of Rippon Tor which is 432 metres.. The huge mounds of rock are Bronze Age burial cairns for the chieftains of the people who lived in the various settlements around. About 30 metres N.W. from the summit there is one of the most curious stone crosses on Dartmoor. It is cut in relief in the living rock and is about 2 metres long in a reclining position. It has been suggested that this holy symbol was cut here to drive away the evil, heathen spirits that might haunt this place of Bronze Age tombs. Another 30 metres from the cross there is an unfinished base of a cheese-press. There is a carving of a cross on it, which could have been channels for the wey to run down , if it had been finished. There are two more half-finished stones nearby. It seems most strange for the stone mason to work on them here with all the difficulties of transporting them when they were completed.]
