Fernworthy Reservoir; Frenchbeer; Gidleigh; Teigh-e-ver clapper bridge; Fernworth Dam. 24th July 2019.
Our team of 6 made a rendezvous at Fernworthy Reservoir Car Park. £4.00 for the day phew!
This route is part of a previous one, modified to start and finish at Fernworthy but continue through to Gidleigh Village. An interesting Village with a small church of Norman origin built during the 13th Century and rebuilt in the 16th Century, utilising the original south wall of the Chancel. The church named Holy Trinity is quite small in stature but delivers a spiritual sense in terms of tranquillity and reverence. Nearby are the ruins of Gidleigh Castle, built around 1324, probably it would have been a fortified manor house.
The return route was via Teign-e-ver clapper bridge , through many hut and stone cirles.
Total Distance 9.7 miles. Total ascent/descent 1458 ft. Temperature for the day varied around 20ºC with some sunshine and cloud. This was different from the vrest of the country; basking in temperatures up to 35ºC in the S & SE…… Mike
